Blanket certificates of origin under free trade agreements (e.g. NAFTA, CIFTA, CCFTA, CCRFTA) are valid for a maximum of 12 months.

  • NAFTA is the North American Free Trade Agreement.
  • CIFTA is the Canada-Israel Free Trade Agreement
  • CCFTA is the Canada-Chile Free Trade Agreement
  • CCRFTA s the Canada-Costa Rica Free Trade Agreement

All free trade agreements (FTA’s) have different formats for the certificate of origin.

Importers are obliged to pay full duty when goods arrive without a valid certificate of origin covering all qualifying products imported; it is an offence subject to penalties to claim preferential tariff treatment without valid proof of origin.

Please ensure that renewed certificates are accurately completed by your suppliers, that copies are sent to us, and that they are kept on file for six years.

The CBSA’s electronic NAFTA certificate of origin is available at: B232
