Duty (MFN Tariffs) on Additional Manufacturing Inputs Have Been Removed
The Minister of Finance has announced additional tariff relief for Canadian manufacturers, including food processing, apparel, electrical equipment, footwear, household furniture and furnishings, metals, motor vehicles and transport equipment, pharmaceuticals, and pulp and paper.
This measure, which was proposed February 5, 2011, will eliminate duty on 70 tariff items and is expected to save Canadian businesses about $32 million annually. Product categories include:
- Apple juice concentrate and other mixtures used in manufacturing beverages
- Hardware to make furniture (for example, casters)
- Parts (e.g. fasteners) used in making footwear and clothing
- Parts to make transportation equipment (e.g. trailers)
- Gelatine capsules used to make pharmaceuticals
- Plastic and rubber conveyor belts
More detailed information (i.e. HS tariff listing) will be published in the December 7 edition of the Canada Gazette.
It is expected that the tariff changes will appear in the 2012 Custom Tariff Schedule.
