On August 6, 2020 the United States announced a 10% tariff on imports of certain aluminum products from Canada. These tariffs will take effect on August 16, 2020.
In response to these new tariffs, Canada intends to impose ‘dollar-for-dollar’ countermeasures on imports of aluminum and aluminum-containing products from the U.S.
The products subject to these countermeasures will be drawn from those listed in Table 1 of the Department of Finance’s ‘Notice of Intent’. This 10% surtax will apply to U.S origin goods selected from Table 1.
These countermeasures will take effect by September 16, 2020 and will remain in place until the U.S. eliminates its tariffs against Canada. The surtax will not apply to U.S. goods that are in transit to Canada on the day on which these countermeasures come into force.
Omnitrans is monitoring this situation closely and will provide updates as they become available.
