CANADA-JORDAN FREE TRADE AGREEMENT HAS BEEN SIGNED

Canada has signed a Free Trade Agreement (FTA) with Jordan. Negotiations began in April of 2008 and FTA negotiations as well as negotiations for an Agreement on the Environment and a Labour Cooperation Agreement were concluded August 25, 2008.

Bilateral trade between Canada and Jordan was $87 million in 2008.

LOWER PHOSPHOROUS LEVELS IN DETERGENTS & HOUSEHOLD CLEANERS

Current Phosphorus Concentration Regulations include a concentration limit of 2.2% for laundry detergents. The regulations have been amended to include other detergents and cleaners, and lower the limits on permissible phosphorus concentrations. Specifically:

  • Lower the phosphorus concentration limit for household laundry detergents from 2.2% to 0.5%.
  • Clarify that a phosphorus concentration limit

INFORMATION & RECORD-KEEPING OBLIGATIONS SPECIFIC TO APPAREL & CLOTHING ACCESSORIES

To verify that goods have been classified correctly, CBSA auditors are increasing verification activities by requesting samples and product literature pertaining to importations that occurred 3-4 years ago.

Customs memorandum D10-17-15 was published to help prevent a significant number of errors in the classifying of textile and textile products, and


FAILURE OF IMPORTERS AND EXPORTERS TO KEEP RECORDS INCLUDING LITERATURE / SAMPLES MAY RESULT IN PENALTIES

Record-keeping requirements pertaining to imported goods go beyond accounting and payable books. Records to substantiate the origin, classification and valuation must also be maintained for a full 6 years following importation. The customs declaration or commercial invoice is not sufficient proof of origin, classification


REQUEST FOR TARIFF RELIEF ON WIDE-WIDTH COTTON, FLAX & RAYON FABRICS

The Canadian International Trade Tribunal (CITT) has commenced an investigation as a result of request number TR-2008-002 for the removal of customs duty on the following fabrics for use in the manufacture of bed linen, duvet covers, pillow shams, cushions and cushion covers:
