GEMSTONES MINED IN BURMA PROHIBITED BY PRESIDENT

On July 29, 2008, the President signed into law a bill to prohibit the importation of certain gemstones mined or extracted from Burma (Myanmar). Within 60 days, the U.S. will prohibit the importation of any jadeite or rubies mined or extracted from Burma as well as articles containing such gemstones until such time the President determines that Burma has met the human right conditions specified in the Burmese Freedom and Democracy Act. Importers of jadeite and rubies and jewellery containing these gemstones mined or extracted from other countries must agree to maintain full records relating to any transactions related to the purchase for a period of at least five years, and have them available to U.S. authorities upon request.
