HOUSEHOLD SMOKE ALARMS MUST MEET NEW ULC STANDARDS
The Hazardous Products Act has been amended to reflect updated standards applicable to household smoke alarms. The following residential detectors must meet the following standards:
- Smoke detectors: CAN/ULC-S529-02, Standard for Smoke Detectors for Fire Alarm Systems
- Heat-actuated fire detectors: CAN/ULC-S530M, Standard for Heat Actuated Fire Detectors for Fire Alarm Systems
- Smoke alarms: CAN/ULC-S531-02, Standard for Smoke-Alarms
These regulations are effective immediately. Compliance will be monitored by Health Canada’s ongoing inspection programs. Importers and manufacturers will be able to demonstrate their compliance to Health Canada through their involvement with the Underwriters’ Laboratories of Canada (ULC) services such as audits and finished product testing.
