Dear Valued Customer,
CHATTOGRAM — Chattogram Port workers have suspended their strike for 48 hours after a weeklong shutdown crippled Bangladesh’s main trade gateway. The decision was announced Thursday night following an emergency meeting with Shipping Adviser Brig Gen (retd) M. Sakhawat Hossain.
Port operations are set to resume Friday morning, offering a brief window to clear more than 11,000 export-loaded containers. The pause gives the government two days to decide on labor leaders’ key demand: scrapping the New Mooring Container Terminal (NCT) lease to DP World.
Unions warned the strike will restart in full on Sunday if no favorable decision is reached. While the temporary halt brings short-term relief to exporters and shipping lines—losing about $15,000 per vessel per day—tensions remain high. Labor leaders said the suspension was granted out of respect for the upcoming holy month of Ramadan, insisting their opposition to foreign port operators is “non-negotiable.”
