(2026-06-09) Amendments to General Import Permit (GIP) No. 83 – Aluminum Products

Effective Date: October 1, 2026

CBSA has issued Customs Notice 26-15, confirming amendments to General Import Permit (GIP) No. 83 - Aluminum Products. Effective October 1, 2026, the amendments expand the existing reporting requirements by requiring importers of certain aluminum products to provide additional information on the country of smelt and cast (CSC).

Key Changes

At the time of importation, importers will be required to specify the following:

  • in the case of goods that contain primary aluminum, the country of largest smelt (CLS) and,  if any, the country of second-largest smelt (C2S), and

  • the country of most recent cast (CRC) for all goods covered by GIP 83.

When CSC Reporting is Required

CSC reporting will only apply to shipments where the combined value of all regulated aluminum commodities exceeds CAD $5,000.

  • Total value ≤ CAD $5,000: CSC reporting is not required.

  • Total value > CAD $5,000: CSC reporting is required for all applicable aluminum line items.

 Timeline

  • Until September 30, 2026: Reporting of CLS, C2S and CRC remains optional.

  • Effective October 1, 2026: Reporting becomes mandatory for applicable GIP 83 aluminum imports.
