Canada Removes Surtaxes on U.S. Origin Products; Steel, Aluminum & Autos Excluded

Effective September 1, 2025, Canada eliminated surtaxes on most U.S. goods to align with the United States, which does not currently apply tariffs on Canadian USMCA-originating products.

While Prime Minister Carney indicated in August that only CUSMA-origin goods would be exempt, the CBSA has clarified that the removal applies to all U.S.-origin goods, except steel, aluminum, and most motor vehicles, which remain subject to the 25% surtax while discussions with the U.S. continue.
