The Government of Canada announced its response to the 25% tariffs imposed by the U.S. on Canadian steel and aluminum products. In direct retaliation, Canada will implement reciprocal 25% tariffs on a range of U.S. imports totaling $29.8 billion, effective 12:01 AM on March 13, 2025. These countermeasures will include steel and aluminum products, tools, computers, servers, display monitors, sports equipment, and cast-iron goods.
These tariffs are in addition to the previously announced $30 billion in counter tariffs imposed on March 4 under the U.S. International Emergency Economic Powers Act (IEEPA). If the U.S. does not withdraw these unjustified tariffs, Canada will introduce further countermeasures on April 2, following a public consultation period. The government is also assessing new U.S. tariffs on certain derivative steel and aluminum products and may impose further retaliatory measures.

To mitigate the impact on Canadian businesses and workers, the federal government has introduced several support measures, including:
A remission process is available to provide relief in exceptional cases. For more details, please visit the following webpage: Process for requesting remission of tariffs that apply on certain goods from the U.S. - Canada.ca
The Trade Impact Program through Export Development Canada, helping businesses expand into new markets.
Favorable loan programs through the Business Development Bank of Canada and Farm Credit Canada to support affected sectors.
Temporary flexibilities in the EI Work-Sharing Program to assist employees facing reduced work hours.
While Canada remains committed to working with the U.S. to resolve these trade disputes, the government will continue to stand firm in protecting Canadian jobs, industries, and workers. Additional measures may be introduced in the coming weeks to further support businesses and individuals impacted by these tariffs.
We will continue to monitor developments and provide updates as they become available.
