Environment Canada, under the Canadian Environmental Protection Act (CEPA) will require importers and manufacturers to report on their activities related to PFAS.
PFAS, often referred to as "forever chemicals," are used in a wide range of everyday products, including food packaging, clothing, and cosmetics.
In the garment industry, PFAS are sometimes used as fire suppressants to meet flammability compliance under the Canada Consumer Product Safety Act (CCPSA).
Reporting Requirements:
Importers and manufacturers are required to report on their activities related to PFAS for the year 2023. This includes providing detailed information on the types and quantities of PFAS used.
The collected data will help the government establish a baseline of PFAS activities and assist in assessing potential risks. This will support the development of preventive or control measures before further PFAS imports occur.
Reports are due by January 29th, 2025.
CEPA has created an Excel file to assist with the reporting requirements.
Failure to report can result in fines of up to $500,000 for a first offense.
