Strike Authorization Passed by Montreal Dockworkers Amid Contract Negotiations

Montreal Dockworkers Approve Strike Mandate

Dockworkers at the Port of Montreal have voted 97.88% in favor of granting their union executive the authority to call a strike, following more than a year of contract negotiations. The vote came after 99.63% of workers rejected a recent contract offer, which the union described as containing only "cosmetic" changes from a previous offer made in April. About 90.33% of union members participated in the vote, held across three meetings.

Before any strike action, the union must provide a 72-hour notice. The union represents 1,150 longshore workers, who have been without a contract since January 1. In response to potential labor unrest, some transportation companies have already rerouted cargo away from Montreal, Canada's second-largest port. The last strike in August 2020 lasted 12 days and left 11,500 containers stuck at the port.

The parties are currently in mediation, with the Maritime Employers Association expressing hope for a resolution in the coming days.
