Following the strike action announced by the ILWU Local 514 (International Longshoremen Workers Union) to commence on July 8th at DP World (Canada) Inc., the CIRB (Canadian Industrial Relations Board) has called the strike illegal. It has been determined by the CIRB that the strike action called was in bad faith as the vote to strike was among one single member of the BCMEA, the Nanaimo branch of ILLWU Local 514.
The BCMEA, following the CIRB declaration on July 7th, has withdrawn its strike notice. The CIRB continues to hold a hearing on the matter this week and has advised the next period is scheduled for August 6th.
Omnitrans is continuing to monitor the situation and has established contingency plans to protect the safe passage of our clients’ shipments should the situation escalate.
